Fixed & Fixed Indexed Annuities

Understand the potential benefits—and the tradeoffs.

Annuities are insurance contracts that may provide defined interest-crediting terms and optional income features. Their suitability depends on your goals, time horizon and need for access to your funds.

Fixed annuities

A fixed annuity generally credits interest according to the issuing insurer's contract terms, which may include a guaranteed period or minimum.

Fixed indexed annuities

A fixed indexed annuity calculates interest credit using a contract formula linked to an external market index. Participation rates, caps, spreads and other terms can limit credited interest. It does not mean the owner is directly invested in the index.

Questions worth asking

  • How long are surrender charges in effect?
  • How much can be withdrawn without a charge?
  • What guarantees apply, and who provides them?
  • Are there optional riders or fees?
  • How does this product fit with other liquid assets?

Guarantees are subject to the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurer. Annuities may not be appropriate for every investor or financial situation.
